LTA Enforces Stringent Road Measures

As Fiji approaches the festive season, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) has issued a warning to enforce stringent road operations over the next two months in an effort to help reduce the incidence of traffic accidents.

LTA acting chief executive officer Irimaia Rokosawa has called on motorists and drivers to be cautious on the roads.

Mr Rokowasa said this following the recent spate of accidents, especially the tragic deaths of three people last weekend along the Queens Highway in Lomawai, Sigatoka.

“The deaths on our roads need to stop, and we can all play a part in reducing road fatalities by adhering to road safety rules and standards and staying alert,” Mr Rokosawa said.

He said the fatal accident should remind drivers and pedestrians to be vigilant and exercise duty on the road.

“We cannot stress enough the seriousness of ignoring road safety rules. Innocent lives are lost because of that split-second decision to disregard safety precautions when behind the wheel.

“Driving safely at all times is paramount. It is of concern to see that the numerous pieces of advice and awareness on road safety continue to fall on deaf ears by some drivers who choose to endanger their lives and the lives of other road users.

He said enforcement and road safety officers would continue to monitor high-risk areas and black spots.

Enforcement programmes

Mr Rokosawa said LTA road safety education teams and enforcement officers had been conducting awareness and outreach programmes in communities and schools.

These include advanced driver training programmes.

“These road safety education tips and awareness were also relayed to the public through the media in English, Hindi and iTaukei languages. These efforts would be rolled out aggressively over the next few months to ensure that people understood the importance of road safety.

“The LTA is working closely with key stakeholders from the public and private sectors to increase awareness campaigns in society, especially as we are approaching the festive season and back-to-school preparations. These two periods are busy times, and there will be a lot of movement on our roads.”

Penalties

He said drivers found breaking the law would be heavily fined and could even face imprisonment.
