The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is calling on members of the public to report bad driving behaviours as the Authority focuses on a collaborative approach to curb the increasing incidents of dangerous driving on our roads this festive season.

LTA Acting Chief Executive Officer Irimaia Rokosawa said the Authority was deeply concerned about the alarming rate of dangerous and reckless driving as this could potentially lead to an increased risk of accidents and harm to the public.

He said the safety of all road users was LTA’s top priority, and the current trends in reckless driving behaviours during the festive season demanded immediate attention.

“The LTA is concerned about the surge in incidents related to dangerous driving, including speeding, aggressive overtaking, and failure to adhere to traffic regulations. These behaviours not only jeopardise the lives of the drivers but also pose a significant threat to pedestrians, other motorists and public safety,” he said.

“So far in 2023, Fiji has witnessed a distressing increase in road fatalities, with a total of 72 fatalities compared to 38 for the same period last year. Of these 72, 10 fatalities were attributed to dangerous driving.

“Over the past decade, speeding has consistently emerged as the leading cause of fatalities on our roads, claiming a total of 286 lives since 2013 - 33 fatalities have already been recorded this year due to speeding alone. These statistics underscore the urgent need for a concerted approach to address the root causes of these tragic incidents.”
