“As you start operating as a taxi driver, there are regulations against it. We have regulations for this called the illegal PSV pointers and we are vigilant on that,” Mr Rokosawa said.

The Land Transport Authority is warning private vehicle owners dubbed as “pirates” to refrain from carrying out illegal Public Service Vehicle (taxi) operations.

This was confirmed by LTA acting chief executive officer, Irimaia Rokosawa, while responding to a question about private vehicle owners overcharging fare on passengers.

He warned private car owners to work within their class categories and that all passengers had the right to refuse payment.

Although vehicles that are doing private jobs have done so in the hopes of earning a living, Mr Rokosawa said it remained as an illegal operation.

“As you start operating as a taxi driver, there are regulations against it. We have regulations for this called the illegal PSV pointers and we are vigilant on that,” Mr Rokosawa said.

“Passengers also became culprits when they chose to pay.

“Sometimes they offer payment, but then they come and report and they don’t realise that that makes them a culprit as well. The fact that we are paying shows that there is a demand, an offer and an acceptance.

“It goes back to that concept of fraud and bribery. When there is no offer, there won’t be any acceptance.”

Mr Rokosawa said LTA would be vigilant on this matter and when found offenders would be taken to task.
