Man, 29, Handed 13 Years In Jail For Rape Of 10-Year-Old

A 29-year-old man has been handed 13 years in jail for the rape of a 10-year-old girl.

The offender, who was related to the victim was been convicted on three counts of rape which took place on May 7, 2020, in Suva.

The court heard that the victim was emotionally and psychologically traumatised by the offender’s actions.

High Court Judge Justice Riyaz Hamza said the court had duly considered the factors in the case determining the sentence to be imposed on the offender which was primarily to deter offenders or other persons from committing such offences and also to signify that the court and the community denounced the commission of such offences.

Considering the time spent by the offender in remand for a period of four months, the offender has been sentenced to 12 years and eight months imprisonment with a non-parole period of nine years and eight months.
