Man Accused Of Raping Woman In Her 70s Remanded In Custody

A man charged with the rape of a woman in her late 70s before he allegedly stole $50 cash, has been remanded in custody by the High Court in Suva.

Alipate Lauti, 20, appeared before High Court Judge Justice Aruna Aluthge.

Lauti faces one count of burglary, one count of indecently annoying any person, three counts of rape, one count of attempt to rape, one count of sexual assault, and one count of theft.

The alleged incident occurred on July 30, this year at the complainant’s home in Lami. State prosecutor from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) sought time to file information and disclosures in the matter.

Right to counsel was put to the accused to which he refused and told the court that he waived his right to a lawyer.

The matter has been adjourned for mention on September 8.
