Man arrested in Lakeba after suspected-drugs discover

A man was arrested yesterday morning at the Lakeba jetty following the discovery of suspected illicit drugs during a routine police check.

The arrest was conducted by officers deployed as part of special operations underway on the island. The team involved personnel from the Fiji Detector Dog Unit, Police Mobile Force (PMF), and the Central Division.

According to police, the alleged drugs were detected by a K9 officer during an inspection of the MV Lomaviti Princess 12, which had docked earlier in the day carrying more than 100 passengers.

A clear plastic bag containing dried leaves, believed to be marijuana, was seized.

The suspect is in custody while the substance had been sent for forensic analysis.

Police have maintained a strong presence at the Lakeba jetty as part of heightened security measures ahead of traditional installation ceremonies scheduled on the island.
