“Maybe that time he arrived home, the illness took its toll and may have led to his death. He was already sick. His body was going down all the time,” he said.

The body of a man, discovered on Friday morning at his home at Lomanikoro Lane in Raiwaqa was identified as Alifereti Raisele.

Neighbour Sakeo Serewai, 67, described the late Mr Raisele as a quiet man who had been battling a long-term illness.

“The last time I saw him was on Sunday. He was watching the sevens rugby next door,” Mr Serewai said.

“After the game, he left. I was told by the other neighbour that the last time they saw him was Monday evening when he came back from the shop.”

Mr Serewai suspects that Mr Raisele’s deteriorating health may have contributed to his death.

“Maybe that time he arrived home, the illness took its toll and may have led to his death. He was already sick. His body was going down all the time,” he said.

He said Mr Raisele had a medical file at the hospital as both his legs started swelling last year.

Mr Raisele has been living alone since the passing of his 93-year-old father two years ago.

“He was looking after his father, and after the father passed away, he was living by himself. I was expecting this to happen one day because he was sickly and living alone,” Mr Serewai said.

He described Mr Raisele as a churchgoing man who attended the Church of God on Brown Street.

“He was a very good man - very quiet.”

Mr Raisele’s brother-in-law and his niece are expected to handle funeral arrangements, Mr Serewai said.

Police confirmed that Mr Raisele’s body was found on Wednesday morning.

A post mortem was conducted on Friday to determine the cause of his death.
