A man is in custody as police investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of a man following an alleged assault at Sakoca, Tamavua, outside Suva yesterday morning.

Sheik Mahmood, a witness to the alleged incident, described the grisly scene as reminiscent of a horror movie.

Mr Mahmood has lived in Sakoca for 14 years. The incident unfolded at around 2am on Sunday.

He recalled that upon hearing a commotion outside, he went to investigate, suspecting a potential theft due to previous incidents in the neighbourhood.

However, what he encountered was far more distressing.

Mr Mahmood witnessed a man and a woman assaulting another man with a chair in front of his home.

Despite his shock, he couldn't intervene as the violence unfolded before him.

The intensity of the situation had the victim covered in blood, a scene Mr Mahmood described as beyond anything he encountered in his time living there.

He also claimed that amid the chaos, the suspects struck his car with the chair.

Despite receiving a blow to the head, Mr Mahmood claimed the victim managed to flee towards a nearby house before collapsing

"I couldn't believe the amount of blood on the ground ... I wished it was just a dream that I could wake up from," he said.

Shivam Singh, another resident, echoed Mr Mahmood's sentiments, expressing shock over the violence in their neighbourhood.

He claimed the house where the alleged incident occurred was frequently hosted to drinking parties, raising concerns about the atmosphere surrounding the event.

Caginavanua said a post-mortem examination was scheduled for today to determine the victim's cause of death.

Efforts are underway to locate the victim's family.
