“Please man up and say no to domestic violence. We don’t need violence. We need to protect our families.”

This is a strong message by the Shree Sanatan Dharam Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji as they observe Navratri festival. The Hindu group has also reminded the community that women deserve respect not only during Navratri, but every day.

It’s national president Dhirendra Nand made a heartfelt plea to men and fathers.

“We must protect our women. Let’s be their guardians, not the ones who cause them harm,” Mr Nand said.

Mr Nand added that Navratri is a time of devotion, with prayers, fasting, kirtans, offerings, and cultural activities such as dandiya held in temples and homes. Navratri is dedicated to the worship of Goddess Durga and her nine forms, each symbolising qualities such as strength, wisdom, courage, devotion, and protection.

Nadi counsellor Mohenesh Singh has called on members of the Hindu community to uphold values of respect for elders and care for the needy during the Navratri festival.

Mr Singh said this is an ideal time for parents to involve their children in traditional worship and moral teachings.

“In all cases, the common theme is the battle and victory of good over evil. We should respect our elders and care for those in need,” he said.

“We hear many cases where elders are being mistreated. We must instil strong moral values in our younger generation. I hope this Navratri brings happiness to you all.”

During the nine-day festival, devotees pray, fast, and participate in traditional music and dance.

Navratri ends next Thursday, followed by Dussehra the next day.
