Martintar death: Family remembers generous builder

The family of a 77-year-old man found dead in a Martintar apartment has remembered him as a generous builder and family man, as Police continue investigating the unexplained death.

Jafar Khan Ali, originally from Martintar, Nadi had been living in New Zealand after obtaining permanent residency. He had returned to Fiji to renew his passport, according to his younger brother, Mansoor Ali.

Mansoor Ali said he discovered his brother's body when he went to deliver breakfast at about 7.10am on Monday.

"I took him roti and curry because he did not like eating bread," Mr Ali said.

"We called out to him, but there was no response. With the help of a staff member, we opened the door. It was not locked from the inside."

Mr Ali said they initially thought his brother was in the bathroom before finding him beneath a mattress on the floor.

"His face had blood around the nose and mouth, and I noticed what appeared to be injuries to his head," he said.

He described his brother as a generous man who enjoyed bringing people together for meals and yaqona.

Family friend Jack Raniga said Mr Ali was a respected builder and a good friend.

"It is very sad news. Jafar was a calm and humble man," Mr Raniga said.

"He built my house, and we never had any issues. Whenever he came to Fiji, we would meet at the Nadi Market. Rest in peace, brother."

A statement from the apartment management said it would not comment while the police investigation was continuing.

Police spokesperson Wame Bautolu said a post-mortem examination had been conducted and the death remained a case of interest.

"We are gathering more information from statements and from his phone. Investigation is underway," Mr Bautolu said.

Mr Ali is survived by three daughters and six granddaughters. He was laid to rest yesterday at the Enamanu Muslim Cemetery.
