The Minister for iTaukei Affairs, Ifereimi Vasu, has explained how landowners would benefit more if the lease money was given to the mataqali (clan).
This contrasts with the current policy where each landowning unit member gets an equal share.
His justification, which he explained at great lengths in Parliament last week, was on the basis that “the land is owned through tokatoka, mataqali and yavusa. It is not owned individually.”
