A 21-year-old student at Nabua Secondary School did not let age be a barrier in his bid to succeed.

Mitieli Turaganikeli, of Senibua (Red) House, was awarded Best Male Cadet during the school’s cadet passing-out parade today.

What makes his achievement even more remarkable is that he is part of the Matua (adult education) programme, often seen as a second chance for students returning to school.

“I’m so grateful to God for this opportunity,” said Mr Turaganikeli.

I never thought I would be standing here today as the best male cadet. This journey was not easy, but with faith, discipline, and support, I made it.

Mr Turaganikeli joined the school as a Matua student two years ago, determined to finish his education. Being older than many of his fellow cadets did not stop him from giving his best during the six weeks of intensive training.

“The training was tough, long hours under the hot sun, early mornings, mental pressure, but they were worth it,” he said. “I want to thank my parents, my guardians, the teachers and most importantly, the officers who trained us and gave us the strength to push through.”

Mr Turaganikeli also praised the school’s cadet credit programme, which helped students develop leadership and resilience. Mr Turaganikeli has his eyes set joining the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and becoming a commissioned officer.
