There will be a media blackout at tomorrow’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission (FTRC) public hearing at the Suva Civic Centre from 8am to 1pm.

Journalists were reminded today that there won’t be any live streaming, posting live updates, or reporting in real-time during the hearing sessions.

According to FTRC Commissioner Ana Laqeretabua the measure protects survivors sharing their stories.

“We need to really work in the best interest of the survivors and witnesses,” Ms Laqeretabua said.

The temporary blackout is a protective measure allowing survivors to testify freely without fear of real-time public exposure or distressing content appearing immediately.

All mobile phones, laptops, and recording devices must be kept on silent during the hearing.

Journalists found violating the blackout will be escorted out by FTRC security personnel and may have future accreditation to the event revoked.

The blackout will lift at 1pm or once the hearing concludes.

After that, accredited journalists may conduct post-hearing briefings with commissioners and publish reports respecting confidentiality requirements under the FTRC Act 2024.

Today’s scheduled hearing did not proceed as no families appeared, though families were scheduled to testify.

The commission stressed the importance of trauma-informed and culturally respectful storytelling to protect survivors and prevent re-traumatisation.
