Police seized several clear plastics believed to be containing methamphetamine, smoking apparatuses and tools in a raid at Namara, Labasa, early this week.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACP) Livai Driu, while confirming the raid yesterday said an undisclosed amount of cash was also seized.

The Fiji Police Force has been conducting drug raids in the Northern Division this month.

Officers from the Police Narcotics Bureau, Crime Intel and Northern Division Task Force intercepted a vehicle at Tuatua, Labasa, following a tip off.

It is alleged that the driver had methamphetamine in his possession.

“Every seizure counts, every arrest is making a difference,” ACP Driu said.

ACP Driu said the raids and consistent arrests were collective efforts of the members of the public.

Labasa Ratepayers Association president Paul Jaduram said the fight against illicit drugs, though not new, was a disturbing one.

Mr Jaduram said illicit drug traders damaged the lives of many youths; affecting their inability to secure employment due to their declining mental health.

Similarly, Labasa Taxi Association’s general secretary, Sujit Sharma, claimed drug paddling was made possible through illegal pirate taxis.

Mr Sharma further claimed there was a high possibility of vehicles operating as pirate taxis transporting drugs.

ACP Driu also assured that Police officers alleged to be involved in drug dealings would be dealt with.
