More than 300 women from across Macuata Province gathered in Labasa yesterday to celebrate International Women’s Day and learn about services and opportunities available to them.
The event, held at the Labasa Civic Centre, was organised by the Labasa Women’s Forum with support from Macuata Soqosoqo Vakamarama and other stakeholders.
Among those attending was Labasa market vendor Reema Kumari, who said the celebration provided a valuable opportunity for women to connect and learn.

“It is good that women from different areas can come together, learn new things and support each other,” she said.
The gathering brought together women from across the province and aimed to connect rural women with government services and development opportunities.
Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection Sashi Kiran, who attended as chief guest, praised the strong network of women’s groups in the Northern Division.
She said stronger partnerships between government agencies and grassroots organisations were needed to ensure services reached women in rural and remote communities.
“Many services already exist within government, but we must work closely with community groups so women know about them and can access them,” Ms Kiran said.
She also stressed the importance of preventative health care, particularly early screening for cervical and breast cancer.
The event featured a range of information and service booths, including cervical cancer and HIV testing, gender-based violence awareness, financial literacy advice, investment opportunities, and consultations on health and social services.
Women’s Fund Fiji programme officer Kameli Tikoitoga also conducted an information session as the organisation prepares to open its next grant call next month.
Ms Kiran reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to working with women’s organisations to ensure services reach communities.
“Every woman, whether in rural communities or urban centres, deserves equal access to health care, protection, economic opportunities and justice,” she said.
She also acknowledged the role of women’s groups in identifying and supporting vulnerable members of society, including widows, single mothers, elderly women and survivors of violence.
Organisers said the event highlighted the power of collective action, with women leaders pledging to continue working with government agencies and stakeholders to strengthen support systems for women and girls across the Northern Division.
