The Ministry of Health and Medical Services has plans to change Coqeloa Nursing Centre in Labasa into a health centre facility.

The nursing station changed to Coqeloa Health Centre a few years ago, but it lacked facilities that a health centre should have.

Minister for Health and Medical Services Doctor Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu while visiting the centre together with the Divisional Medical Officer Northern Dr Tiko Saumalua last Friday revealed that the centre was upgraded verbally only.

“As it is, it was upgraded as a health centre verbally and in terms of infrastructure and support to go with it was delayed,” Dr Lalabalavu said.

“What we are now doing is we are playing catch up.”

He is assuring the Coqeloa community and the health staff that the ministry would prioritise the much-needed infrastructure and support.

When asked if funds were available to carry out the necessary requirements, he said yes.

The centre looks after a population of around 3000 from eight villages and 21 settlements.

It is managed by two doctors and five nurses.
