Restaurants Fined over Food Safety

Seven businesses across Fiji have been fined nearly $15,000 during a major crackdown on food safety violations.
The Ministry of Health and Medical Services revealed yesterday that its Food Unit targeted non-compliant establishments, including retail stores, takeaway businesses, and street food vendors, with individual penalties ranging from $500 to $3100.
A retail store in Rakiraki Town received the harshest penalty – a complete closure order – after inspectors discovered serious and ongoing health violations.

The ministry, in a Facebook post, stated, “These findings underscore our commitment to ensuring that businesses adhere to necessary licensing requirements and maintain high standards in the community.”

During their inspections, health officials uncovered numerous violations, including meat with freezer burn and foul odors, freezers operating at improper temperatures, and inadequate cleaning procedures.
The presence of pests, such as weevils and cockroaches in storage areas and on shelves, was identified as particularly concerning.
The highest penalty of $3100 was issued to a retail store, while a combined takeaway and retail establishment faced a $2600 fine.
A coffee shop and another retail store were fined $1000 and $1200 respectively.
Street food vendors paid $1500 in penalties, while the smallest individual fine of $500 was given to a takeaway business.
The ministry stressed that “compliance was vital for protecting consumers and fostering a fair marketplace for all business owners.”
“The Food Unit will continue to enforce these vital regulations and support lawful business operations.”
