Conservator of Forests Sanjana Lal emphasised this during the ministry’s submissions to the Standing Committee on Public Accounts yesterday.

Ms Lal said as of January this year, any logging that was to be done, would need to have a vetted and approved EIA from the Ministry of Environment.

She also revealed that the ministry had plans to conduct the National Forest Inventory (NFI) which would provide extensive information on forests and woodland.

“The last NFI was done in 2007 and it measured the volume of timber but moving forward we have plans to do another NFI and this will measure carbon as well,” Ms Lal said.

“This is because under climate change, we are moving towards carbon trading.”
