At the heart of the Nasinu Festival, beyond the music, food stalls and entertainment, will be a bevy of seven beautiful contestants advocating on pressing social issues that affect communities.
They will add to the life, value and unity of the annual event underway at the Valelevu Ground this week.
Among them is 24-year-old Asupa Taivoce, sponsored by Makoi Ward. Originally from Tawava, Yawe in Kadavu with maternal ties to Nukuni, Onoilau in Lau, Ms Taivoce is using the platform to speak out on cyberbullying in Fiji.

It is an issue that cuts across age, gender, and location in Fiji, the region and globally. Ms Taivoce believes the rise of online harassment is silently eroding the confidence and mental wellbeing of many, especially youths in Makoi.
“Cyberbullying doesn’t leave physical scars, but the emotional and mental pain is real. Too many of our young people are losing hope and self-belief because of the cruelty they face online,” she said.
Her message resonates strongly with a large residential area in Makoi, a growing and vibrant community where young people spend hours online for school, work and social life. Ms Taivoce said that while the internet connects communities, it must not become a weapon that tears them apart.
“We need to start teaching digital respect in our homes, schools, and workplaces. If we want a safer and stronger Nasinu, it begins with protecting each other. Even in the online space,” she said.
The Nasinu Festival has always been more than entertainment. It is a space for reflection, empowerment. By choosing cyberbullying as her advocacy, Ms Taivoce is challenging the community to confront an invisible, but growing threat.
“This is about giving young people in Makoi and the courage to rise above the hate,” she said. The Nasinu Festival returned last year after a five-year lapse.
The festival will be held from October 4 to October 11.
