The youngest queen contestant of the Digicel Duavata Northern Crime Prevention Carnival aims to advocate against substance abuse.

Judy Hewson, is Miss Seaqaqa sponsored by Kunal’s Unique Investment.

The Year Ten student of Shiri Guru Nanak Khalsa College said there were many people who abused the use of substances without any good reason.

The second eldest of three siblings said substance abuse was the repeatedly harmful use of any substance, including drugs and alcohol.

“Substance abuse is the harmful pattern of using substances such as tobacco, alcohol, illicit drugs, and prescription drugs leading to impairment or distress with one or more of the following behaviours,” Judy said.

“The use of illegal drugs or the use of prescription or over-the-counter drugs or alcohol for purposes other than those for which they are meant to be used, or in excessive amounts.”

She added that substance abuse could lead to social, physical, emotional, and job-related problems. While Judy hadn’t yet decided what future- career to pursue, she said that during the week- long carnival at Subrail Park in Labasa, she hoped to change lives.

“I am not aiming to grab the crown because I want to use this only opportunity to deliver information on substance abuse,” she said.

“While I am thankful to my sponsor I call out to the people of Seaqaqa for their support.”
