The Fiji Navy has issued an urgent warning for mariners to stay off the water as deteriorating weather conditions hamper search efforts for a missing punt reported overdue between Korolevu and Vatulele.

In a public advisory, the Navy said RFNS Savenaca was deployed at 3am today after receiving reports of a punt that left Korolevu for Vatulele yesterday afternoon and was later reported missing.

Search efforts remain ongoing.

The Navy said the incident highlighted the dangers of travelling at sea during adverse weather and urged all mariners to heed existing weather warnings.

“Mariners, particularly small boat operators, are reminded that venturing out during adverse weather places lives at serious risk and may also endanger those involved in search and rescue operations.”

Despite the warnings, several small boats and punts were intercepted at sea early this morning.

The Navy called on the public to prioritise safety and avoid unnecessary travel on the water until conditions improve.

“We urge all members of the public to exercise caution, make responsible decisions, and avoid taking unnecessary risks. Safety must remain the priority.”

The search for the missing punt continues.
