There were mixed reactions yesterday from Nadi business owners and market vendors in the increase of value-added tax (VAT) from today.

The increase from nine (9) per cent to 15 per cent VAT.

Nadi Town street-seller Rajendra Goundar said the increase in VAT would not affect him.

“A lot of my stuff I buy from retail shops I sell on the streets. If the VAT increases, then prices will increase and it will affect the customers too.

Nadi Market vendor, Merewalesi Tinai, 64, who is the lone income earner in her family, said the increase of VAT would be a burden.

“I travel from Nadroga-Navosa to come and sell my produce here. We used to put in $140 carrier fare to transport our produce here.

“Being the only one supporting the family with income I received from the market, this VAT increase will add more load. The income does not only help support my family, I contribute to everything required in the village as well as contribution to the church,” she said.
