Strong leadership is key to ensure that oceans are recognised with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. In addition, co-ordination between respective bodies will assist in the process.

Permanent representative to the United Nations (PRUN) Ambassador Satyendra Prasad made the comment during a COP 26 side event, “Mobilising ocean-climate action at all levels for increased climate ambition.”

The event highlighted the importance of activities carried out at the domestic, regional and international platform within the ocean-climate nexus.

It also heard about how these activities were critical towards “fitting together the fragmented puzzle pieces” which encapsulate ocean action. 

Ambassador Prasad, highlighted Fiji’s progress within the ocean space through the National Ocean Policy and its function as a legislative proxy that integrate actions of the multiple implementing agencies within the ocean dimension spanning its multiple thematic areas such as security, biodiversity and sustainable development.
