Graduating inmate Viliame Mocevakaca is encouraging children to take advantage of the free education the Government is providing for Fijians.

He was one of the eight inmates who graduated with an Automotive Mechanic Engineering Stage One certificate at the Nasinu Corrections Vocational Centre graduation ceremony on Tuesday.

The 22-year-old was sentenced to seven years imprisonment. He is serving his sentence for one count of unlawful cultivation of illicit drugs in 2020.

The youngest of five siblings said he could not go back in time and change the past, but he could work towards a better future.

“I reached up to Year 11 and never have I thought that I would have a certificate under my name while in prison. I thank the Fiji Corrections Service for this opportunity to learn a trade,” he said.

“When I get out of here, I hope to continue my studies and seek employment. This is my third year in prison, and I have four more years to go.

“I have learned a lot while here and that is to work hard and when given a second chance to continue to strive to become a better version of myself every day.”

Mocevakaca thanked his parents for being there for him even if he was incarcerated.

“Most of the time people say that studying is hard, but I know the good thing about studying because I have a certificate under my name now. Education is the key to a better life because to be employed nowadays education is important,” he said.

He advised young people not to take their freedom for granted and to study hard and never give up.
