Being thick skinned and determined is what Monisha Prasad uses as weapons to survive in a male dominated field.

She works as a Cadet on a Government vessel that transports goods to islands. She has been with Shipping Services since 2017, with her duties involving tank sounding, general maintenance onboard and helping load cargo during trips.

As Fiji marked International Women’s Day yesterday, Ms Prasad was among the many women who crossed boundaries and excelled in male dominated fields.

She is also currently doing a Diploma in Nautical Science at the Fiji Maritime Academy.

Securing a job during her first year of studies was a positive step in achieving her goals, however, Ms Prasad said did not receive much support during the decision making phase.

“When I came to enrol myself, I had been bombarded with gender-role questions and was asked if I was sure about pursuing my career in this field,” she said.

“My mum wanted me to become a doctor, but in high school I decided I would follow my heart.

“My parents told me to get a white-collar job instead because this was not an ideal job for girls.

“My younger sister was the only one who supported me, but afterwards my parents accepted it.”

Ms Prasad said she wanted to prove critics wrong.

“I wish my workplace was welcoming when it came to women being part of a male dominated field, but I overcome those challenges by being strong.”

The 23-year-old grew up among fishers whereby she developed a love for the sea.

“I think I was keen on joining this field at a young age as my uncles were fishermen and I used to admire them go fishing.

Ms Prasad believes people should not decide their career options based on whether the field is dominated by male or females.
