More doctors will be urged to serve in rural communities and its health centers apart from stints at hospitals in urban areas.

Minister for Health and Medical Services, Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete made those remarks at Tau Village in Nadroga last week.

This comes after the villagers raised to the minister there was only one nurse conducting visitation to the communities and serving at the Tau Health Centre.

Dr Waqainabete said he wanted doctors to move out to the rural communities.

He said it has been a long time since doctors have been stationed in hospitals.

“I have stressed to doctors that they need to position their services outside the main hospitals.

“Some of the work done by the visiting nurse in your community can also be done by the doctor,” he said.

He told the villagers that Dr Farihah Shagoofa, who has been posted to Tau Health Centre, would work with the nurse who was conducting community visitation and working at the health centre.

Meanwhile, the villagers have also given names of nurses who were from the village but were serving in hospitals and outer islands to be posted in Tau Village.
