More Males Commit Suicide than Females

Lifeline Fiji has revealed alarming statistics and scenarios that more males are committing suicide compared to females.

Statistics and research studies have found that there are a number of gender differences in suicide.

These differences are known as the gender paradox of suicide.

While women are more likely to experience suicidal thoughts, for example, men are much more likely to take their own lives.

Lifeline Fiji officer in charge Jeremiah Merekula said suicide and attempted suicide cases by gender from January to April showed 24 males took their own lives.

Mr Merekula said the data on suicide and attempted suicide cases by gender and the methods used during the period from January 30 to April.

"This includes various methods such as hanging, paraquat, other chemicals, tablets, burns, and injury," Mr Merekula said.

"Hanging was the most prevalent method for both genders, with 26 suicide cases and one attempted suicide case. "

Other methods, including taking medicinal tablets and burns which were to be of lower occurrences.

He said there were 13 cases of suicide and attempted suicide among females and 37 cases of suicide and attempted suicide among males during this period.

"It is discerning to note that there is higher prevalence of suicide cases among males (24 suicides) compared to females (4 suicides).
