New Zealand-based Gastroenterology Specialist Dr Dinesh Lal confirmed teams would return next year to provide accessible health services to Fijians.

Dr Lal is a member of the Sathya Sai International Organisation of NZ.

He was one of the many health specialists who provided health services at the free Medicare Camp at the Ba Market Bure yesterday.

This medical camp is the initiative of the Sathya Sai International Organisation of Australia, New Zealand and the Sathya Sai Service Organisation of Fiji.

Dr Lal said up to four camps are expected to visit every year.

He said normally when the teams visited Fiji, they brought health professionals and volunteers with different specialities who try to go to remote areas due to poor access to medical services.

“We love getting to the people there because we went to the Ra Maternity Health Centre yesterday and that was amazing because people were so nice even though they were needy, they’re very welcoming so we tried to help them and the energy was so good,” he said.

He hopes that a stronger partnership will be formed with the Fijian Government through the Ministry of Health and Medical Services in terms of facilitating the teams better.

“I think the most important thing for us is we want to help, we want to do it properly. We want to follow the rules and regulations and we always like the Government to actually help facilitate for us so that we can do more,” he said.

“Our biggest challenge is to have enough space to be able to see everyone, this is why we have to try to go where we can get more rooms. So, this (Ba Market Bure) was one of the places we thought we could go, normally we go to schools but we want to be flexible and we don’t want to disrupt the schools.”
