A mother is demanding justice after her son was violently assaulted by a classmate inside a Lautoka High School classroom, an incident that was caught on camera and widely circulated on social media.

Zaima Khan, 43, says her 15-year-old son, a year nine student, was left with bruises and stomach pain following the attack, which took place in front of other students last Wednesday.

"Today, it happened to my son, tomorrow it will happen to someone else's son," she said.

"I just want justice to prevail, and teachers should not leave students unattended in class."

Ms Khan said the school had called her in, claiming her son was "in a big problem," but upon arriving, she discovered he had been the victim.

"My son did inform us that he had pains in his stomach and had a few bruises on him too, so we took him to the police station and had his medical done too," Ms Khan said.

Since the incident, her son has returned to school, while the alleged attacker has reportedly stopped attending. Ms Khan added that her son appeared withdrawn and "a bit weird" over the weekend.

"Seems depressed with the situation.

Also, for the police to act when a complaint has been lodged. Today, is the sixth day. If that video did not go viral, no one would have done anything," she said.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed that the matter was reported.

"We confirm that the report was lodged," she said.

"The student was called for questioning and released."

The head of school declined to comment, citing the ongoing police investigation.

The Ministry of Education is expected to issue a statement soon.
