Following an avoidable accident on Wednesday night motorists driving along the Teidamu Road bend in Lautoka have been warned to refrain from speeding.

A 44-year-old man sustained injuries after the vehicle he was driving allegedly veered off the road and into a drain.

An eyewitness said the vehicle had allegedly hit an electric pole and was partially burnt from the impact.

Divisional Commander West Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Iakobo Vaisewa confirmed the incident yesterday when contacted for a comment.

“The accident happened between 7pm to 8pm, there were no fatalities, and only the driver got injured. The vehicle was heading towards Ba and had actually gone off road and landed in the drain,” he said.

He said it was suspected that the driver of the vehicle had been speeding.

“He was treated for minor injuries and sent home,” he said.

“One of the major causes of accidents is speeding, therefore we are urging motorists not to rush to their destinations. We also strongly advise that motorists concentrate on the road when driving, whether is driving in the day or at night, concentrate on your steering wheel.”

He said the driver’s plight will be decided after investigations were completed.
