The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) is urging the public to exercise caution at sea following the recent incident involving nine fishermen reported missing.

In a statement issued on April 29, MSAF stressed that safety at sea must remain a top priority for all maritime users.

Vessel operators and captains have been advised to closely monitor weather conditions, including forecasts up to 24 hours after departure, and to avoid travelling in rough or unpredictable seas.

MSAF is also calling on travellers to inform family members, village headmen or trusted contacts of their travel plans, including departure times, destinations and expected return.

The authority emphasised the importance of ensuring vessels and outboard motors are in good working condition, carrying sufficient fuel including reserves, and having spare parts and basic tools on board.

Operators are reminded not to exceed passenger limits and to ensure the vessel master is properly certified and competent.

All vessels should be equipped with essential safety gear, including lifejackets, fire extinguishers, first aid kits, flares and reliable communication devices such as marine radios or fully charged mobile phones in waterproof casing.

MSAF also urged maritime users to maintain proper navigation and communication throughout their journey, travel during daylight where possible, and remain within safe and familiar routes.

The authority said adherence to these measures, in line with Fiji’s Small Craft Code and international maritime safety standards, was critical to safeguarding lives.

It stressed that preparedness and responsible decision-making were key to preventing incidents.

MSAF said it would continue working with partner agencies to promote maritime safety awareness and urged communities to remain vigilant.
