The Maritime Authority of Fiji (MSAF) is investigating how and why the passenger vessel Lomaiviti Princess 11 ran aground along the Maloi Passage on the west coast of Ovalau yesterday.
The vessel, carrying more than 40 passengers, including crew members and five vehicles, was departing Natovi Jetty for Levuka when the incident occurred.
MSAF chief executive officer Joweli Cawaki said he was informed of the incident shortly after the vessel ran aground.

“Lomaiviti Princess II accidentally ran aground along the Maloi Passage at approximately 9.20am yesterday,” Mr Cawaki said.
“Fortunately, another vessel, Saint Mary, was on-site to provide towage and assist in transporting the passengers to Levuka.”
According to Goundar Shipping Service’s manager, Captain Aca James Small, the vessel was following its normal route when it hit the reef.
“We are investigating the cause of the incident because this is their daily route; the crew members must have been negligent, thinking they knew the route well,” he said.
“Thankfully, no passengers were hurt or injured.”
Captain Small noted that they would have to wait for high tide to salvage the vessel.
Goundar Shipping Limited has cancelled all scheduled travel to Levuka until further notice.
