MSAF warns of legal action over defamatory claims
The authority said it respected the right of stakeholders to express their views but stressed that accuracy and responsibility were essential in public discourse.

The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) has reaffirmed its commitment to maritime safety and regulatory integrity, warning that defamatory public statements against the authority will be met with legal action.
In a statement, MSAF said its primary mandate remained the safety of life at sea and the protection of Fiji’s marine environment, while addressing recent public commentary on its operations.
The authority said it respected the right of stakeholders to express their views but stressed that accuracy and responsibility were essential in public discourse.

MSAF clarified that appointments to its board and the Maritime Appeal Tribunal were carried out by relevant appointing bodies in line with existing laws and public service procedures.
On safety and compliance, the authority said it had strengthened audit and inspection programmes to ensure operators meet legislated standards.
“All regulatory actions are based strictly on technical assessments and compliance records. MSAF applies the law consistently across all operators.
“MSAF remains open to engagement with industry stakeholders; however, such engagement must be constructive and grounded in a commitment to addressing identified safety deficiencies and complying with approved operational requirements.”
MSAF also expressed confidence in its leadership and operational direction, noting that it continued to manage complex challenges while maintaining safety and access for maritime operators.
Looking ahead, the authority said it expected full compliance from all operators and would take action where breaches were identified.
“MSAF expects all maritime operators, to comply fully with legislated safety and operational requirements. MSAF will not hesitate to take appropriate action where non-compliance is identified. All regulatory decisions will be made in accordance with applicable laws to ensure adherence to regulatory requirements.”
