Muslims have been reminded that they can receive COVID-19 vaccination during the month of Ramadan.

Minister for Commerce, Trade, Tourism and Transport, Faiyaz Koya made the comments while opening the $1 million Masjid Hanifa at Nadovi in Nadi on Saturday.

Mr Koya said the vaccination was encouraged by a growing voice of the Islamic scholars who said the vaccines does not nourish the body during the Ramadan.

“Thus, I also encourage you all to get vaccinated as soon as it is available,” he said.

“Religion is a powerful force and promise which inspires us to engage our worldly work as a direct extension of our faith.

The Mosque.

The $1 million mosque was an investment made by a member, Bobby Khan in memory of his late mother, Hanifa Begum.

Mr Khan said the mosque was an eye opener for equality. It has a salat room for women to also partake in activities.

“A lot of mosques in Fiji don’t have the facilities for women. They are mostly left behind to stay home and pray,” Mr Khan said.

“Women are an important part of our lives and they are equal to us.”

The minister acknowledged Bobby Khan, Azreena Khan, Irish Khan and Samir Allam and all those who have generously contributed to the place of worship.
