The relocation of Nabavatu Village in Dreketi is expected to be completed by August, despite weather-related challenges, Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management Mosese Bulitavu says.

Mr Bulitavu made the comments during a visit to Macuata House in Labasa yesterday, acknowledging that ongoing rain has slowed progress on the site.

“It is raining sometimes, and mostly during rainy seasons working on the site is a bit difficult,” Mr Bulitavu said.

“Our plan is to have that completed this project by this year through handover in August and occupants should be in their respective homes by then," he said.

Nabavatu Village, a coastal community in Macuata Province on Vanua Levu, faces increasing climate-related threats, including coastal erosion, flooding during king tides and cyclones, storm surges, and saltwater intrusion affecting freshwater sources and arable land.

Located on low-lying and vulnerable terrain, the current site is no longer considered safe for permanent settlement.

The relocation to higher and safer ground aims to protect lives, secure access to freshwater, preserve livelihoods and maintain community cohesion.
