The Mineral Resources Department (MRD) has verfied claims about the discovery of precious stones inside a cave in Nakorotubu, Ra, after a villager, Inoke Turaga, shared images of rock formations found inside the cave.
Mr Turaga, of Nalidi Village posted photos on social media showing what he believed were valuable stones, along with a piece of rock from the cave.
Yesterday the MRD clarified that the images show stalactites, which were common natural formations found in caves.

MRD director Apete Soro explained that stalactites were generally mineral formations that suspend from the cave ceiling, forming unique shapes.
“They (stalactites) are normally formed through gradual deposition of dissolved minerals, primarily calcite that seeps through cave ceilings controlled by the environment conditions of cave, which is often under some pressure that lacks oxygen and sunlight.
“The variance in colours is dependent on the minerals the caves are associated with. Stalactites can be used as decorative ornaments and can be sold in their natural form, or as custom handmade pieces.”
Mr Soro said the ministry had not conducted any assessments as yet; however, a preliminary site visit could be arranged for a team to ascertain the claims, provided that the initiative comes from the landowners.
“Known facts about stalactites is that they are rarely associated with minerals such as gold,” he added.
