Members of the Naleba Holy Cross Catholic Church in Labasa held a memorial service to remember and pray for victims of the Easter Sunday bombing in Sri Lanka.

This was held during the Divine Mercy Sunday, which is celebrated on the second Sunday of Easter, as an annual feast to honour devotion to Jesus Christ’s tender mercy for all humanity.

The Eucharistic Minister, Patrick Dass read a letter written by a Sri Lankan Catholic Nun to the bomber (killer) after a Hindi Christian Funeral Song as families went up, lit a candle and prayed for peace for the victims and their families.

“Many innocent people lost their lives, it is very sad that people in their place of worship have been targeted for such disturbing attacks,” Mr Dass said.

“Everyone is still shocked to hear what happened on Easter Sunday because it followed the deadly attack in Christchurch.”

He also mentioned that members of the community thanked God that they were away from all these (referring to the Christchurch and Sri Lanka attacks) and living peacefully in Fiji.

“We should continue to pray for peace as many lives have been affected,” the primary school teacher said.

Naleba Holy Cross Catholic Church has 120 devotees and is a sector of the Holy Family Parish, which is 20 kilometres from Labasa Town.

The church was first founded by three South Indian Catholic families in 1906 under the indentured system.
