Five-year-old, Naomi Sura is believed to be the country’s first drowning victim of the year.

Naomi is the eldest child of Maciu Wainimokomoko of Bukuya Village and Mere Tubulea of Nukuilau Village in Nadroga.

The family resides at Saukaba Settlement in Nukuilau.

In a statement yesterday, Police said the victim was seen with a group of boys at around 2pm on Sunday afternoon near the Sigatoka river bank where she was allegedly told to go home.

It was reported that the boys turned away for a few minutes and when they looked back, the child had disappeared.

A search was conducted by all residents of Saukaba Settlement.

The victim’s body was found just before midnight. Investigations continue.

Parents and guardians are urged to keep a close watch on their children at all times.
