Villagers of Nasaqalau on Lakeba Island, Lau, have started businesses to help in their children’s education and rebuild their lives after past natural disasters.
The businesses, copra production and a carrier for hire, generated about $3000 in its first four weeks.

They invested $30,000 with Unit Trust of Fiji.
Village headman Isireli Turaga said the carrier was purchased from years of savings which amounted to $80,000.
“We do not want to be in desperate situations and run around when there are problems,” he said.
“We are trying to open as many businesses as we can, but we are taking one step at a time.”
Copra is sold at $1.30 per kilogram to Copra Millers, a State-owned entity, while the carrier earns $300 weekly.
Mr Turaga said it was important not to spend hard-earned money on any village occasion.
“Keep the business separate from your family or village dealings.
“Never make an excuse just to fill in the gap on a village obligation,” he said.
Nasaqalau villagers plan to invest in beach-de-mer harvesting.
To scale up productivity, Minister for Agriculture, Vatimi Rayalu, commissioned a copra shed and sun dryer for the village.
“This is a great example you are setting for your generations to come,” Mr Rayalu said.
“We need to create a business mindset so that we don’t have to worry about anything.
“You will come across challenges in your business, make sure you are ready to face them.”
