Safety concerns have prompted for the temporary closure of Natovi Jetty after an underwater assessment revealed submerged boulders posing a risk to vessels using the facility.

The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) said the obstructions were discovered near the lower and high ramp faces of the jetty and could become a significant navigational hazard, particularly during the exceptionally low tides expected this month.

Acting Chief Executive Officer Sereana Lalakobau said the authority's priority was ensuring the safety of passengers and preventing damage to vessels and infrastructure.

As a precaution, MSAF has strongly discouraged ships from berthing and departing at Natovi Jetty and has notified the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) to immediately remove the hazards.

The FRA has since announced the closure of the jetty for 24 hours, from 8am on Sunday, June 7, until 8am on Monday, June 8.

During the closure, vessel berthing, loading and unloading operations will be suspended to allow contractors to carry out the necessary works.

Ms Lalakobau said the decision was made after careful consideration of the risks posed by the submerged boulders and the forecast low tides.

Travellers and shipping operators have been urged to make alternative arrangements and monitor updates from their respective operators.

MSAF said any decision on extending the closure or resuming normal operations would rest with the FRA, which is responsible for managing the jetty.

The discovery highlights ongoing concerns about the safety of critical maritime infrastructure serving passengers and freight operators travelling between Viti Levu and Vanua Levu.
