Non-communicable diseases (NCD’s) are on the rise among youths.

Northern Division Medical Officer (DMO) Dr Tiko Saumalua, said NCD’s are a common problem in the country with the young generation facing imminent threats.

He made this comment during his initial health care community outreach programme at Vunimoli Islamia College in Labasa, yesterday.

“This health outreach is the best opportunity for the young people, if they are available to access our free services and improve their health,” Dr Saumalua said.

Dr Saumalua said NCDs remain a massive health problem in Fiji with many stakeholders highlighting the need for additional health camps.

“We understand now the shift of NCD’s is coming down to the young generation,” he said.

“There is no harm to check basic elements such as blood sugar level, blood pressure.

“And see how fit you are as a young person.”

Apart from this Macuata outreach, other health care outreaches have been placed at other medical sub-divisions (Cakaudrove, Taveuni and Bua).

According to Dr Saumalua an assessment would be conducted to ascertain the population yet to be provided with free medical services.
