Shamal Narayan, 37, lost his father, Ram Narayan, and house in a fire last Friday at Qaraniqoli Settlement in Dreketi, Macuata.

The family of the fire victim, Ram Narayan, 74, who lost his life after being trapped inside their burning house, have thanked their neighbours for coming to their aid.

The late Mr Ram’s son, Shamal Narayan, thanked the neighbours of the Qaraniqoli Settlement in Dreketi. They lost their father in the house fire last Friday.

Police spokesperson, Ana Naisoro, said the fire started from the room of their four-year-old son, Shymal Narayan.

The late father was hailed a hero for his quick action to save his grandson and the other family members, despite being trapped in the inferno himself.

The four-bedroom house was razed to the ground on Friday at around 10 am and the family of six lost an important family member.

Mr Shamal resided with his late father, wife and four children.

The father-of-four children lost all belongings except for the vehicle he took to his workplace at M. Aziz & Sons Limited in Dreketi and is the sole breadwinner of the

family.

The estimated cost of damage is above $100,000 and the loss of a secured shelter traumatised the children.

The 37-year-old said the community had been supportive as they provided them with monetary and clothing aid.

And he was assured of receiving a tent from an undisclosed Good Samaritan.

“It’s our humble request to people and stakeholders if they could donate us some housing materials so we start with the rebuilding process,” he indicated.

The family sought refuge at the cousin’s brother’s home in the same settlement.

Neighbour and area president, Vinod Kumar, said Mr Ram’s death was a sad day for the community.

Mr Kumar said other neighbours and well-wishers had helped them with clothes and money to rebuild their lives again.
