Never Giving Up Keeps Marama Going

Roela Koroi Marama’s application to join the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS)’s Basic Recruitment programme was rejected five times.
While this disheartened her, it did not stop her from applying every year.
Following her final attempt, Ms Marama was accepted, passed the course, and graduated yesterday.

Ms Marama, who hails from Nakavika, Wainikoroiluva, in Namosi, shed tears with her family yesterday as she recalled those days of job hunting.
On top of her struggles, losing her dad at a young age was one of the most difficult moments she had to live through.
Ms Marama said wearing the corrections uniform for the first time felt so unreal, which took hard work, sacrifice, and dedication.
“I remember applying five times in the last two years, but when I returned, I was receiving calls that I was not shortlisted,” Ms Marama said.
“It was so discouraging when I was trying to provide for my family, especially coming from single parenthood. Being part of the force like the FCS was my aim.”
She said her ability to secure a position in the force after 13 weeks of rigorous training was the result of her hard work and dedication.
She aspires to rise through the ranks of the force and hold a senior post in the future.
