More commercial space has been allocated at Savusavu, Vanua Levu to boost progress in economic growth.

Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources Filimoni Vosarogo commissioned a 1.14 hectare commercial lot at Qaraniqatio in Savusavu last Friday.

The lot will not only provide the much-needed commercial space but also create jobs, stimulate local businesses, enhance and improve the overall economic landscape of Savusavu.

The 1.14 hectares of state land will have nine or ten commercial blocks and car park space for everybody, assuming that on one commercial space, 15 jobs would be generated.

Mr Vosarogo said a total of 150 people going to get employment in this small space within Savusavu Town.

“150 going to work in Savusavu, as opposed to going abroad to Australia and New Zealand and elsewhere, or even Suva,” he said.

“This project shows the power of public and private partnership, the state and private players coming together to ensure that there is viable platform for growth in towns and areas.”

“In the past decade or so, there has not been much movement for various stakeholders.”

He highlighted the importance of supporting local businesses, local investors and engaging in the opportunities.

“As we are all aware that development doesn’t always come by itself first; You must have the infrastructure that needs to happen first,” he said.

Mr Vosarogo thanked the Land Planning, Surveying and Engineering Consultants Pte Limited Fiji for its lead role in the project.

“It is an honour to be a part of Government, we are keen in ensuring that development comes to the North,” he said.

Land Planning, Surveying and Engineering Consultants Pte Limited Fiji director Sanya Dayal said through this partnership, all feasibility studies were conducted as part of achieving sustainable goals in development works and serve as a thriving commercial hub in the future.

He said phase two of the project would include works on the Energy Fiji Limited grid, water and roads for commercial lots.
