Smoke and foul smell emitting from the Vunato, Lautoka, landfill site or rubbish dump will soon end with talks underway for a new site between Lautoka and Nadi.

Lautoka City Council (LCC) chief executive officer Mohammed Anees Khan said the relocation was for health and safety reasons.

“There’s work going on to relocate to a centralised landfill site for the entire Western Division which will cater for Rakiraki to Sigatoka,” he said.

“There was a lot of progress made last year. The partners that we’re talking with are pushing to get some approvals and they’ve identified the land and also assured us that it’s going to happen. They’ve got the blessing of Government to go ahead with it.”

He said the relocation could take place next year, and would be similar to the Nabouwalu landfill.
