The Jerusalemi Methodist Church in Caubati, Nasinu will hold its first Sunday service today.

The half a million dollar project was officially opened yesterday. The project is something the more than 300-plus worshippers from the crowded Caubati neighbourhood have worked together and raised funds for.

This is also a move that will lead to the demolishing of the old church in Matau Street and church services moved down the street into a new building – the pride of the community. Chairman of the church committee Semi Luvuiwai said the old church was built in 1996.

“We the community had built the church on part of a park which belongs to the Nasinu Town Council,” he said.

“It is only right that we demolish the old structure. The new land was bought from the Housing Authority.

“The progress and the fact that we have a brand new church for the community shows the unity and ability to work with each other in the community. This is the result of faith, perseverance and belief in each other.”

It was a special day in Matau Street. After the morning church session overseen by the head of the Wainivula Methodist Circuit Reverend Apete Toko, the worshippers headed to the new church.

Top Police woman Unaisi Vuniwaqa and her family were there. The Vuniwaqas were one of the pioneer families that assisted in the building of the old church and among the contributors for the new one.

Ms Vuniwaqa said the church held a special place for her family because all her children were baptised there.
