Spending hundreds of dollars transporting dead bodies miles away from home and bringing them back for a funeral is now a thing of the past for villagers of Bukuya, Ba.
This follows the opening of a new morgue at the Bukuya Health Centre by Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama yesterday.
Bukuya villager, Seruvi Cawi, 60, said the worry of villagers forking out money from their own pockets for transport to take loved ones who passed away or were nearing death was eased.

“To take a dead body from Bukuya Village to the Lautoka Hospital is $400 return and $300 return to the Nadi Hospital,” he said.
“On top of that we have to find money for funeral arrangements for our loved ones and we face a lot of financial difficulties.
“Now, having a morgue here has made it easier for us to prepare and look after our loved ones before burial.”
Mr Bainimarama told the villagers that they needed to take care of the mortuary.
“To ensure this is a sustainable facility that is always ready to serve those who need it most you must pledge to take proper care and put your loved ones to rest before this period has passed,” Mr Bainimarama said.
“Filling the greatest needs of our people is a commitment that I am proud to live up to as your Prime Minister.”
