The National Fire Authority (NFA) is urging Fijians to celebrate Diwali safely this year, warning that a moment’s carelessness with diyas, candles, cooking, or fireworks could turn the Festival of Lights into a tragedy.

NFA Chief Executive Officer Puamau Sowane said the festive season often sees a spike in fire incidents, most of which are caused by unattended flames, unsafe cooking practices, or mishandled fireworks.

“Let us all work together to ensure that this Diwali is remembered for joy and unity, not preventable tragedies,” Mr Sowane said.

“Celebrate responsibly, stay alert, and call 910 immediately if an emergency arises.”

NFA records show that several homes have been destroyed in past Diwali celebrations because of unattended stoves, candles, or diyas placed near flammable materials.

Mr Sowane said such incidents were entirely preventable if families exercised caution.

He reminded households to place diyas and candles on heat-resistant surfaces, keep them away from curtains or paper decorations, and always ensure they are extinguished before going to sleep.

The Authority also issued a strong warning on the use of fireworks, urging the public to buy only from licensed vendors, light them in open areas, and keep children under close supervision at all times.

“Fireworks should never be used near homes, vehicles, or dry vegetation. Always have a bucket of water or sand nearby in case of sparks or flames,” he said.

Mr Sowane said NFA teams are conducting nationwide community awareness programmes to promote fire safety not just during Diwali, but throughout the year.

“As families come together to celebrate, we want everyone to remember that fire safety begins at home. A few simple precautions can save lives,” he said.
