The National Fire Authority (NFA) has assembled a team to investigate the fire that destroyed parts of the Rups Big Bear warehouse, Eskay Motors, and Raiwaqa Bus Company at Grantham Road, Raiwasa, Suva, early yesterday morning.

NFA chief executive officer Puamau Sowane said the investigation would take about two days, given the estimated floor space of approximately 2000 square metres.

In a report released yesterday, NFA confirmed receiving a call on its 910-emergency line at about 12.36am.

Firefighters from Suva, Lami, Valelevu, Nakasi and Nausori Fire Station and an ambulance responded to the call.

“This was a massive operation that involved firemen from five fire stations and a duty crew from Navua Fire Station was on standby at the Suva Fire Station in the event of another emergency,” Mr Sowane said.

“The crews used multiple deliveries with feeder line from fire hydrants and at 3.54am a stop message was received, indicating that the fire had been extinguished.”

Although the probable cause of the fire has not been determined yet, NFA confirmed a timber and corrugated iron structure sustained 95 per cent damage.

Mr Sowane is urging members of the public and property owners, especially businesses, to ensure security is taken with priority and precautions.

“Ensure that adequate fire safety measures are implemented and hire security to keep watch over their properties,” he said.
