No environmental damage has been reported following a fuel leak at the PetroOceania terminal in Walu Bay.

The leak prompted a major emergency response, with nearby businesses, workers and offices evacuated as a precaution.

Joint inspections by officers from the Department of Environment, the Ministry of Public Works and the Ministry of Health found no evidence of environmental harm.

In a media statement, authorities said containment measures were activated immediately, with the leaked fuel directed into the facility’s bund and separator pit to prevent it from spreading beyond the site.

Fuel transfer operations were later completed to reduce tank levels and allow for permanent repairs, with the National Fire Authority providing on-site safety support throughout the process.

Inspectors observed only limited traces of overflow within the immediate facility area, which are being addressed through a controlled clean-up under regulatory supervision.

Drone surveillance over the Walu Bay drainage network and nearby river system detected no signs of fuel discharge into surrounding waterways.

Authorities said there were no observed impacts on marine life or the wider riverine environment, although monitoring will continue as a precaution.

The facility operator has been directed to meet all containment and clean-up costs. Regulatory notices have also been issued, requiring full remediation, preventive maintenance and infrastructure upgrades to prevent future incidents.

Government said it would continue to strengthen regulatory oversight to protect public safety and manage environmental risks.
